The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
