Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously permissive, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
