European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
